Best Restaurants in Dehradun
Dehradun is one of the most loved cities in India for reasons not far to seek- a training center for army officers, education hub for students, reputed public and private institutes, the Paltan bazaar, Himalayan landscape, and great eating places.
Dehradun is not about only a place. It is about full of emotions of millions of people who cannot stay here forever. The city is full of green trees, beautiful plants, and mountains. If somebody wants to live in a pollution-free environment, Dehradun is the best place to live.
This article is a tribute to all those eating places which have stolen the hearts of many. In fact, most residents are loyal to their favorite joints. If you are planning to visit Dehradun, be prepared to experience a burst of culinary delights ranging from local Pahadi food to Tibetan, Chinese and North Indian cuisines. Though eating joints are spread out across every nook and corner of Dehradun, I have picked top five for that finger licking and lip-smacking experience.
1. Kaafal Restaurant:
A multi-cuisine restaurant with Uttarakhandi Food Pavilion, on Sahatradhara road near IT Park. It is the single most place dedicated to promoting authentic Pahadi food which is both nutritious and healthy. Urad dal pakodi, madua poori, kaafli, jhangra kheer are highly recommended if you opt for local flavors otherwise they have an elaborate multi-cuisine menu to choose from.
There is much to feast the eyes with while waiting for your food. The simplicity of the food, striking aromas and genuine hospitality will make you want to visit Kaafal again and again. It has indoor as well as outdoor space and reflects local taste even in its setting. Kaafal comes alive in the evenings in its best local avatar when, other than food, you can enjoy live music and at times folk performances. It also has an outlet for local crafts.

2. K C Soup Bar:
Situated at Rajpur road, a few meters up and opposite Silver City, you just can’t miss this restaurant, teeming with food lovers almost all the time. It is perhaps the oldest joint in Dehradun and truly justifies its tag line ‘one name one legend’.
Generously filled mutton momos with spicy-tangy chutney and piping hot chicken/ tomato soup will make your day. Of course, there are umpteen options to choose from. At KC the ingredients are fresh and flavors bold. Don’t be disheartened if you can’t find a place to sit, just order your food and have it in your car or have it packed.
3. Kalsang Restaurant:
This is a branch of the Mussoorie Kalsang, but much grander and more spacious. Located at Rajpur road, opposite Osho Hotel, Kalsang has a typical Tibetan ambiance and décor and serves 100% authentic Tibetan, Thai and Chinses food. The menu also features Indian dishes. Order as per your preference but do try their chilly momos served in spicy gravy with shallots and bell pepper or cheese momos or thukpa. Service here is top-notch. Every bite you take is value for money. Cast a glance at the various currencies displayed while waiting and leave a personal note on a tissue that you would love to read in your next visit.
4. Café Village Highway:
Ideally located near FRI on the National Highway connecting Dehradun with Haryana, Punjab, and Himachal, this restaurant is just the kind of place you would love to stop by. But do look out, for, you might just miss it as its exterior look merges with the surroundings. The interior will soothe your heart. It is done up in mud, wood, bamboo, and jute. It presents a typical village look. The restaurant offers world cuisine with intense flavors. You can go for Mexican or Italian or Lebanese and don’t miss their interesting beverages. Their signature dishes are cooked with secret home recipes. If it is a Friday, you are lucky as they have live music too that will transport you to a world of joy. No doubt this place is different but a difference that you will want to visit again.
5. Reggae Chilli Café and Restaurant:
Located near ATS Heavenly Hills apartments, on the Sahastradhara road, this restaurant is fast winning the hearts of people. Here all four elements namely, cuisine, service, music, and ambiance combine to give to inner joy and satisfaction. It has rustic theme décor and great party lawns. The menu offers North Indian, Italian and Chinese cuisines. The best part is that you get that great sensation of being out in the open, far away and close to nature. To top it all they have live music and good singers. Try their pasta or order Roasali Kebab and finish off with some regalicious apple pie!
